I can sew!

7.28.2011

I know what you are going to say... "really, Emily? More greek key for your house?" And my answer would be "Heck yes!" I have long admired greek key pillows like the ones below.

So, I decided to try it out myself. I picked up a pillow with a removable cover from Target (on clearance for $10) and some greek key trim (also on clearance!!!). Not going to lie to you blog-world, this project took a long time. It was alot of measuring and eyeballing to make sure it was as symmetrical as possible.

Initially I was thinking I would just use fabric glue to attach the trim to the pillow, but after thinking it out I decided to sew it on... hand sew... Like I said, it took a long time.

The outcome is just ok. I like it, but I don't love it. But it's always nice to know you can do something yourself instead of paying someone else to do it for you.

I am not a professional seamstress-yet! But overall my first sewing project was pretty successful!

They've been everywhere lately...

So I decided I need to partake in this trend. I have been looking around for a while and decided these were my favorite ones.  But I also contemplated these, these and these.

Here.

Also, friends, I just wanted you to know that I managed to get 20% off and free shipping just by Google-ing 'Kohls online coupon'. Balla! I always do this before I place any online order. There is NO reason to pay retail.... ahhhh I love a good deal.

Oops I did it again

Britney Spears reference.... Anyone?

Nonetheless, I am referring to DIY black and white art. I did some here. But in the move, one of those pieces got misplaced. I really wanted to incorporate black and white, kindergarden-esque, crazy art into the living room. I knew I was on the right track after I found this pic on Pinterest:

  So I did these:

And of course, I do love the piece from my Grandmother that hangs in between them :)

The great art debate

7.20.2011

We need new art! Which is super exciting to me. We have this wall that is in major need of a color splash... looooove David Bromstad, hence the reference.

It's not only to fill the space, but also to cover the cable cord that comes out of the wall. The previous owners of the Chouse had their tv mounted on the wall, but to make better use of the space I moved the tv more toward the middle of the room.

I am an art.com, allposters.com and Etsy art frequenter. So I have been perusing them all lately in search of something the Hubs and I can agree on. I definitely want something contemporary and maybe abstract. Here are the top contenders.

Helen Freankenthaler, Blue Atmosphere

Mark Rothko, No. 3

Jasper Johns, Three Flags

Mark Rothko, Untitled c. 1961

My favorite is the Blue Atmosphere... but the Hubs doesn't like it. So we will probably end up going with one of the Rothko prints. I would really prefer an original, but I haven't been able to find anything I love. If you have any suggestions, send them my way!

Color Craving: Navy and Orange

7.19.2011

It's by no means new, but recently I have been LOVING the orange/navy combo in both fashion and interiors. Around this time of year, I always start thinking "ORANGE" with football season coming up (Go Pokes!).... but this year it has an added bonus in the form of navy. Just wanted to share some images of this fab combo.

Loving CraigsList

7.18.2011

One thing we have never had in our house is a TV console. Every house we have lived in so far has had a mantle which we put the TV on. But in the Chouse no such thing exists. So for the past month or so, I have been on the hunt for the perfect piece of furniture. I knew I wanted something light because it was starting to feel a bit dark in the living room. My friend in Houston, Hallie, has an AWESOME console....

I wanted to find something similar (white, gold hardware, lots of storage), so I started scouring antique shops, the Salvation Army and Craigslist.

Craigslist came through! I found these little gems: (unfortunately, the Betty Boop doll was not included in the deal)

What caught my eye most was the rattan style legs and hardware.

And at $35 per piece, they were a steal! In the listing, it said they needed a new coat of paint which was totally fine with me.

Mid-paint (note Daisy, 'supervising'). Since we no longer have a garage, all DIY-related things have to be done in the house. This requires no-VOC paint/primer, floor covering and lots of vacuuming.

And here is the after!

They totally work! I might add some trim detail later... but we will see. I will do a post on the layout of the living room later, but as you can see the TV sits in front of a pair of doors. In order to make this room work we decided to lose the functionality of the doors and I am so glad we did. But more on that later.

Now, I am off to prepare for our first visitor to STL! My Momma gets here tomorrow and I am VERY excited!!

Need a chair? How about a lamp?

7.15.2011

If you do need either of the above items, then hopefully your local TJ Maxx has as awesome of a selection as mine does! I was just there and had to share what I saw. And obviously, the price point cannot be beat!

Look at that nail head.... luuuuurve.

Such a unique pattern on this one.

Oh hello Mr. Horse.

How unique is this lamp base?

Pretty sure you can find almost this exact chair at Restoration Hardware for about triple what it was at TJ Maxx.

My favorite find...

Sooooo... really wishing I needed a chair or lamp. Oh well, happy weekend everyone!!
