Black Skinnies

8.30.2011

So on a whim this weekend, I ran into a resale shop. And I am SO glad I did. Anytime you go to a  thrift store, you just really never know if you am going to find junk or awesomeness. This time, it was awesomeness. I found these Levi black skinny jeans (tags still on!) for $4. You read that right. $4.

Find yours here.
Seriously. Ohhhhmg I just love a deal. I can't wait to wear them this fall. Here are some looks I am digging with black skinnies.

It's also worth mentioning that I found a J. Crew navy velvet blazer at the same store. Any STL locals who want to know which thrift shop it was, just shoot me an email. I will happily go back with you :)

Most Eligible Dallas: Courtney Kerr Style

8.29.2011

Okay, we all know I watch the worst reality television. Can't explain why I love it, I just do! So, when I saw previews for Most Eligible Dallas, I knew I would just have to watch it. And since I am pretty familiar with all that is "Dallas," I thought it would be interesting to see Bravo's spin on it.

So far, I haven't been disappointed. It's pretty much everything I suspected it would be. Pretty people behaving badly? Yes, please!

One of the most talked about characters is Courtney Kerr…  And I just have to say that I really love Courtney’s style. She has some really awesome vintage pieces,  unique jewelry and I even love her (at times) crazy poofy hair. She is awesome at mixing high and low to create her own signature look.

Here are some of my favorite looks of hers from the show and various press events.

Here and here.

I wish I could find a better pic of that kimono, because it was fab. Anyway, Courtney recently started a personal style blog, which you can find here.

Anyway! Have you all been watching MED? What do you think?

Chicago trip- planned!

8.26.2011

Cody and I planned our first trip to Chicago! Moving to St. Louis, we were so excited about the proximity of our new city to other really cool cities that we could plan fun weekend trips to (Chicago, Nashville, Louisville etc.). So, we will be heading up to Chicago next month, and I would love to know from those of you who have been... what should we do? Where should we go? Where should we eat/shop??

Here.
The best part about this trip is that my Dad/Step Mom AND my Step Brother/Step Sister in law will be there as well. There is nothing I love more than family time :)

Thankful Thursdays: The Library

8.25.2011

Call me old fashioned but I love public libraries. Each time I move to a new city one of the first things I do is get a library card, because I always have a reading list that is a mile long :)
Here.
What's not to love? You get to read a book before you decide if you want to commit to buying, it's kinda like book dating!  (sidenote- I am not a Kindle person just yet... I think I will always love having 'real' books on my shelves).

Not to mention, there is always excellent people watching.... we are talking right up there with malls and airports. AND you pay taxes for services like the library. And I am alllllllllllll about getting my money's worth!

Here.

I am especially thankful for libraries today because I am so excited to delve into my newest    check-out that I picked up yesterday: America's Queen, The Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (thanks for the suggestion Val!)

Now that I have rambled on and on... what are you thankful for today?

Word art

8.24.2011

While perusing Pinterest the other day, I came across this tutorial, that shows how to make some very romantical (<-----Kardashian reference) word art in a heart shape.

I have always wanted to better my InDesign/Photoshop skillz, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. But I really liked this idea, which uses Microsoft Word, and thought the Hubs deserved a mid-week present. So I gave it a go. The directions were super simple and easy to follow.

So I used the lyrics from the song we danced to at our wedding (awww!) and just printed it out on glossy computer paper....

Then I just put it in an empty frame I already had...

It's sweet, right? I def. get the "Thoughtful Wife" award this week. Now it just needs to find a home that isn't in the dining room chair.

Happy Hump Day!

Thankful Thursdays: first one!

8.18.2011

So, I feel like there has been alot of bad news out there lately. Famines, deaths, political bashing, natural disasters.... the list goes on and on... and on! It's easy- for me at least- to get bogged down by all that is wrong with the world.

Because I know you probably don't visit my blog to hear about all things terrible and depressing, I wanted to start a new series about things I am thankful for. I thought it could be a small way for me to put some good vibes out into the world :)

And really, I think being thankful (even for the little things) is a very important part of life.

So today, I would like to share that I am thankful for: Southwest Airlines.

Thanks to Southwest, I am going to be able to fly to Houston this weekend for an amazing price. Without them, I might not be able to travel to see friends and family as often as I do. And that is not something I take lightly, people!

So that's my little thankful thought for the day. What about you guys? What are you thankful for today?

5 things I love- Three Pink Dots

8.17.2011

Today's "5 Things I love" comes from Lauren who blogs at Three Pink Dots. I am so happy that she agreed to share with us 5 things in her home/closet that make her smile. Lauren is a fellow OSU alum turned blog friend. I am obsessed not only with her impeccable and glamorous home, but I also love seeing what she wears to weddings, tail gates, etc. because she has fabulous fashion sense as well!

Hello all you fabulous Main Street Chic-ers! I was beyond honored when Emily asked me to guest post on the ‘five things I love’ series. Just to throw it out in the beginning, the two most important things in my house are my hubby and Mr. Bo, the crazy dog I love.

Other than that, let’s get to it! Listed below are 5 of my favorite things in my house/closet.

1. Dorothy Draper Bar
Dorothy Draper is one of my favorite eras in design. To complete the ‘Mad Men’ style of the dresser we decided to turn the top of it into a bar. Who says you can only have a bar on a bar cart? Style your own bar on a small dresser or table anytime. This steal-of-a-chest was found on craigslist for $30, and after a trip to the ICU, the chest was re-born again!

2. Vintage framed scarf
When designing the space for my entry I really wanted a dynamite piece of artwork, but just couldn’t find the right one. While browsing through a vintage store in Wichita, I found a beautiful scarf of the Vatican, and had it framed. The structural piece of the architecture and soft colors welcome you into our home with peace.
Take any scarf you find with beautiful colors and lines and make your own art!

3. Purse
One of my favorite things in my closet, would have to be my Burberry purse. Given to me as a Christmas gift, I have been in love ever since. This purse is taken with me everywhere. No matter the outfit I have on, I always feel better with this on my arm. It’s a piece I know I will have a long time, and I love the classic monogram print. I also love the equestrian horses on it.

4. Vintage Car
We found this vintage monopoly-style car at an antique mall in Kansas City. It sits in (P)park on my husband’s bedside table, next to a photo of us in his dad’s vintage car leaving the wedding. One day it might just be darling in a baby boy’s room. (varoom-varoom)

5. Breakfast nook
Every morning I look at this table and pinch myself. How my mother found it on Cragislist, I’m not really sure. After a trip to the reupholster, the table and chairs are amazing and functional. The IKAT drapes draw your eye towards the nook as soon as you walk in the house. Fun.

Thanks again Emily for the opportunity to share! Hope you all have a wonderful and blessed day.

Thanks so much Lauren! You have such a unique style...can't wait to see what you do with your home next! If you are interesting in seeing more, head over to http://www.threepinkdots.com/!

My pride and joy

8.15.2011

It's no secret that I love my doggie, Daisy. I wanted to find a new way to showcase my love for her in the house (even though she is already displayed in the gallery wall, but that's neither here nor there.) And I am not the only one out there who feels that having pet art is a definite plus!

Here.

Here.

I love the idea of having a traditional design element like a silhouette, but giving it a new twist- like using a pet instead of a person :) So I decided to take matters into my own hands and used this tutorial as a guide and went to work! First, I needed to find the right picture.

I decided this was the one because it has great detail and it wouldn't just look like a blob. So I saved it on a zip drive, went to Kinkos and had them print it out in a 22x28 (which is the size of the canvas I was going to paint it on).

This is what I came home with. So I just cut Daisy's outline out, then taped it to the canvas.

I traced around it, using a fine point black sharpie.

The last step is just to paint it!

Ta daaaaaa!!!

I love it!! And even though the Hubs thought I was a bit weird for wanting to do this at first, I think he really likes it too!

Dream Farmhouse

8.11.2011

So, my family has a farm. It was acquired in the Oklahoma land run and has been in the family ever since. My Mom now takes care of the cows/operations/farmhouse and has been toying with the idea of building a new house or renovating the existing one. I, for one, am definitely in favor of this idea. Mostly so she can have an enjoyable place to spend time after the HARD work she does. But also because I have this picture in my mind that it will be a place that we will use for family holidays, gatherings, etc. And hopefully, it will be a place that I can take my children one day.

So, obviously I turned to Pinterest (you can follow me here) to start a board of inspiration images for the FH. Here's what I have come up with so far.

The FH will definitely need a nice, big porch.

With a great place to share a meal outside.

And some dogs running around, naturally, bc the whole fam is full of animal lovers.

The interior of the home will be comfortable, cozy, welcoming and lived in.

With a large living area

And super comfy bedrooms.

We will also need a nice place to wash off the Oklahoma red dirt...

And a place to catch a quick breakfast before heading out to feed the cows.

And of course the heart of the home will need to be just as cozy as the rest of the house...

details...

All images via here.

So fun to daydream. What do you think... would you put in a day's worth of farm work in order to be able to hang out at this house? I definitely would!

xoxo, Emily

PS- SO sad to hear that High Gloss will be no longer! Best of luck to Paloma and the rest of the team in their future endeavors. High Gloss will be missed!
